“Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, for the sexiest show on Vashon!”

Burlesco Notturno, that sexy, saucy soiree, returns to Open Space for Arts & Community with titillating, tantalizing new performers in our third installment, CIRCO (Italian for circus, a traveling show of performers.)  The greatest show on earth has never been so spectacular or sexy – with aerialist extraordinaire Terry Crane, acrobatic extravaganza and juggler Romeo Valentino, burlesque stars Randi Rascal and Bunny Monroe . Hot French jazz comes from the acclaimed Seattle group Bric-a-brac, featured weekly at The Pink Door. Burlesco Notturno CIRCO is hosted as ever by the infamous Mme X and her Lawyer.

In the nouveau burlesque tradition that waves back to Seattle’s own Gyspy Rose Lee, Open Space’s Burlesco Notturno series brings some of the Northwest’s most extraordinary burlesque artists together for an evening of exotic entertainment on Vashon.  The nouveau burlesque tradition is firmly rooted in Seattle, and is celebrated in venues such as The Triple Door, The Pampas Room, The Pink Door, Teatro ZinZanni's "Mezzo Lunatico" and many others.

Burlesco Notturno CIRCO Artists -

Janet McAlpin (Mme X, Founder of Open Space, Artistic Director & Producer of Burlesco Notturno): Janet trained for two years at the School of Jacques LeCoq (Paris, France), co-founded UMO Ensemble and has been teaching, directing and performing physical theater for over 23 years. Janet has taught clown theater at Freehold Studio and Naropa Institute (Boulder, Co). She has directed UMO and Circus Contraption and other small groups. She has performed various characters on different apparatus (Hoops, trapeze, globes and stilts) at Teatro Zinzani, Cirque du Flambe, the Moisture Festival and with UMO Ensemble. Her most recent creative endeavors have ranged from writing and performing Red Tiger Tales with UMO to creating a duet clown trapeze act with David Godsey and an apple.

David Godsey (Her Lawyer, Founder of Open Space) is a graduate of the Professional Training Program at the Circle in the Square in New York and the Laboratory of Movement Studies at Ecole LeCoq in Paris. Since co-founding UMO in 1987, the Ensemble has been the primary focus and outlet for his performance work. Outside of UMO, David works with his partner Janet to create and perform original character clown pieces, including some on aerial apparatus. He also serves as an artist for the Vashon Artists in the Schools program.  David is currently a co-producer and performer with the Church of Great Rain, where he can regularly be seen and heard preaching as the Reverend Hunter Davis.

Iconoclast, Anthropologist, Jester, Stripper: Randi Rascal is your own private radical.  An incendiary alloy of beauty and wit, she will seduce you out of the mainstream and into her world of glamorous anarchy, where nothing is sacred and everything's sexy.  Randi’s talents have been featured across the U.S. and Canada, from the tiny, historic stage of Seattle’s Pink Door to the grand showroom at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Competition in Las Vegas. With every performance, she beckons you beyond the bump n’ grind.  Get revolutionary.

Bunny Monroe, The Shimmying Shaking Sweetheart brings her warmth and Hawaiian background to the Emerald State. Miss Monroe also goes by Ruby Mimosa and is one of the primary instructors at Miss Indigo Blue's Academy of Burlesque, located in Seattle. She has been teaching men and women how to Bump, Grind, Shimmy, & Shake for the past 4 years. Bunny's dance background involves 13 years of Ballet training, as well as Jazz, Tap, Hula, Gymnastics & Diving. Since her addition to the Atomic Bombshells in 2007, she has toured around the globe including countries like Portugal and Shanghai.  Bunny has graced the stages of many well know venues such as The Triple Door, The Crocodile, Neumos, The Pink Door, the Tractor Tavern. Bunny shakes and shimmies with Brent Amaker and the Rodeo, performing in music festivals like Reverb Festival, Bumbershoot, Seattle Tattoo Convention, and SXSW.

Terry Crane is a born circus artist, having climbed and performed from his earliest years. After completing a bachelor's degree with a minor in contemporary dance, Terry was accepted at the selective National Circus School of Montreal. In the years since finishing NCS, Terry has wowed audiences, critics, and circus afficionados alike with his fearless, original aerial rope technique. He has performed in 10 countries on 3 continents, with multiple television appearances, and in front prestigious persons such as the king of Norway and the prime minister of Thailand. He is a longtime student and practitioner of capoeira, contact improvisation, hip hop dance, and physical comedy. Terry loves the sublime experience of circus performance, and daring to reach across the fourth wall to share with all his audiences.

Romeo Valentino was 16 years old when he first began to perform as a circus artist during the famous street festivals of Italy. Upon graduating from high school, Romeo decided to pursue circus more seriously by training at circus school in Italy. After two years of studies, Romeo left his home to further develop his craft at the prestigious National circus school of Montreal.  Street performing has left Romeo with an intimate understanding of the role between the performer and the audience. Using the technical skills mastered at circus school and the comedic instincts honed by performing on the street, Romeo seamlessly creates a blend of theatrics and acrobatic feats.

Bric-a-brac Trio: Something spectacular happened down the street from the flourishing dance halls of France in the 1920’s and 30’s.  Manouche guitarists and classical musette accordionists met with their traditional repertoire of virtuoso classical, gypsy and folk music.  Learning to improvise and swing - together they discovered a new sound… JAZZ-HOT!  The tradition continues with Bric-a-brac and is as exciting as ever.
