A benefit to raise money for young artists on Vashon Island

Seattle-based trio Naked Giants

Enjoy an incredible music lineup, food, drink, and sunshine while supporting a great cause this August 6th at Open Space for Arts & Community with Bric/Brac. Bric/Brac is presented by Open Space for Arts & Community to
support the work of Vera Project, Mode Music, and ORBIT All-Ages Space. A new event soon to be a returning favorite, the premiere of the Bric/Brac Festival is the perfect opportunity to experience – and support – youth in the arts on Vashon.

Bric/Brac will take place on the expansive, Great Lawn at Open Space for Arts & Community, on Vashon Island with delicious food options from local purveyors and information tables hosted by local youth arts-oriented non-profits.

Headlining the event is Seattle trio Naked Giants, who burst onto the national music scene with their 2018 full-length debut, “SLUFF,” a candied and insanely catchy blast of unhinged pop- punk-grunge-surf-rock. But if that record was the sound of “affable miscreants just out of high school,” as one reviewer said, then “The Shadow,” the band’s new and second studio effort, is a decidedly more mature offering. An energetic and exhilarating musical rollercoaster ride, critics have noted Mudhoney, Joy Division, The Ramones and Talking Heads as musical influences on the album.

Julia Shapiro

The festival also includes performances by Caitlin Sherman, Julia Shapiro (of Chastity Belt), and It’s All Happening. Sherman has been described by NPR’s “All Song’s Considered” as possessing a “clear, haunting voice that drew me deep into the music at first listen.” With roots in the Seattle indie rock community, Julia Shapiro is known for her work in the bands Chastity Belt, Childbirth, and Who Is She?, as well as making music as a solo act. As a guitarist, Mark Deming describes Shapiro sound as “wiry and purposefully rough around the edges, falling somewhere between indie rock and garage punk, though she brings an accessible if elemental melodic sense to her music.” Its All Happening is a youth band from Seattle, who are also music students of Naked Giants.

Bric/Brac offers attendees of all ages the chance to discover new and unexpected experiences and to foster an appreciation for a variety of art and artists from Vashon Island and the greater Puget Sound community. The event’s goal is to raise $8,000 to provide education and support for young artists and island non-profits while vitalizing Vashon Island culturally and economically.

The Vera Project is an all-ages nonprofit space dedicated to fostering personal and community transformation through collaborative, youth-driven engagement in music and art. A music venue, screen print shop, recording studio, art gallery, and safe space for radical self-expression, VERA is a home to Seattle’s creative community. Mode Music is a Seattle-based music school for youth featuring summer camps and private and group lessons. Open Space for Arts & Community is an event and community space on Vashon, dedicated to co-creating extraordinary artistic and community opportunities.

The fun begins at 3pm outdoors at Open Space for Arts & Community. Masks will not be required but will be heavily recommended and we will have sanitation stations throughout.
