Contact Improv Interrogates and Tunes Itself: Celebrating 50 Years of Contact Improvisation Dance with K.J. Homes & Karen Nelson
A lecture-demonstration and multimedia JAM, ritual and community event. All are welcome as either participants, observers or both. During the 3.5 hour event, Karen Nelson and K.J. Holmes will facilitate through guiding a warm-up, and screening videos that will influence and engage participant dancers, and observers to embody and discover the past, present and futurity of CI. Each person has their own story. The ritual element gives a space for each dancer to claim, share, their own origin and identity story in their own dance experience. The interrogation includes archival video footage from Diverse Dance Research Retreat, an initiatory program that brought dancers with and without disabilities to Camp Sealth on Vashon Island annually from 1993-2000 for a 7-10 day conference and performance sharing. The footage also includes works by Ishmael Houston Jones, mayfield brooks and the late artists Fred Holland and Nancy Stark Smith. These clips will lead into dance improvisation practices of “replay”, ensemble dancing, and observance from an audience perspective. The interrogation’s objective is for practitioners to gain felt-experience of the past, open to the present and dream into the future. Observers are welcome to come and go any time during the program.
Community dances from video archives and shares origin stories.
