“Best Production, Best Actors” – Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards, 2019
Zandezi is a provocative, daring, and mind-blowing physical theatre piece that interrogates criminal justice systems through the lens of prison services. The play follows Philani Dube, who was wrongfully accused of a crime that he did not commit. As the story unfolds, it weighs the roles of “Prison vs. Society,” as Philani battles for his freedom during his stay in Zandezi (prison). Through the 60-minute performance and Q&A session, dive deep into the central question: “is prison a rehabilitation center, or does it create more hardcore criminals from innocent people?”
“Best Director” -National Arts Merit Awards, 2019
The play was produced by Zimbabwe Thearte Academy. The Zimbabwe Theatre Academy Trust (ZiTAT) is dedicated to the professionalization of theater in Zimbabwe through providing specialized accessible training programs, community outreaches, research, performances, festivals, and collaborations that capacitate young people in delivering professional theater products and services. ZiTAT values the use of theater as an empowerment tool for community transformation and deriving strategies that create employment opportunities for youths in the service of audiences and indeed livelihoods for the graduates of the academy.
