We at Open Space for Arts & Community value the voices of our community’s youth. We heard them asking for more creative spaces, more connection, and more access to arts and music experiences.
With that in mind, we have been working to create Teen Express, a program that serves and collaborates with Vashon teens (13-18) to co-create extraordinary artistic, community-building experiences that enrich and inspire all involved.
Teen Express seeks to address issues of equity and access to arts and music by making our programming free to teens, by providing free nourishing food at our events, and by engaging in ongoing conversations with families underserved on Vashon due to socio-economic, social/political, and language barriers.
We want to welcome these teens to Open Space and give them the opportunity to explore and experiment with fabric and visual arts with our Drop in Design Studio. Teens will have access to mentors, materials, and creative space to manifest ideas, to learn new skills, and to play and experiment, and to accomplish artistic projects.
Teen Express will hold free monthly Club O nights where music – art – food – connection are alive. These teen only events will have youth performers, opportunities to create art, delicious food, and space to connect with other teens.
Earlier this month, in addition to the teen-only dance, we held a Teen Open Art Studio.
The work the teens did in that creative space was really something. Not just the work itself, but their joy, their creative spirit, and their collaboration was something to behold.
