!Attention! Artists at Work project no. 6

The Youth Mural will be created by Island youth and installed at the ORBIT youth center. The mural will consist of about 10 panels, each 32” square. Local youth artists will create individual works on the panels, forming a collage of art. Artists may create 2- or 3-dimensional works of art on the panels. Previous experience with murals and public art is not necessary. The goal of the mural is to engage island youth in creating a mural that will welcome people to ORBIT. The mural will remain in place for at least three years. Artists must live or go to school on Vashon Island.

Mural Location

The mural will be located at Open Space on the main building, 18870 103rd Avenue SW. It will be affixed to the north wall near the front door of the ORBIT youth center. About 10 panels will be hung on a steel mounting structure fabricated for the mural. Each year thousands of people attend art and community events at Open Space. The mural will beautify the entrance to the ORBIT youth center and be a focal point of the building.

Budget and Materials

Artists will be paid a stipend of $100. Teams of two to three youth artists will work under a mentor. Each team will be responsible for one to two mural panels.

Open Space will provide the support panel(s) and paint. Artists may propose panels that incorporate a 3D element as long as they are weatherproof.
