!Attention! Artists at Work Project No. 3

Literary Flash Fiction/Prose Poetry Call to Artists

!Attention! Artists at Work is the Open Space jobs program for public art. This program’s third project is a Literary Flash Fiction/Prose Poetry Project by Island writers lead by Open Space and Sharon Shaver. Writers will create individual works of fiction, forming a collection to be presented to the community. The final commissioned writings will be circulated in multiple fashions. These may include local newspaper(s), Voice of Vashon radio, banners in town, projection onto Island buildings, readings, etc.

Submissions: 1 or 2 works of flash fiction or prose poetry. 400 to 500 words maximum. Theme: Close to Home. Writing should include elements of hope and ingenuity to encourage community resilience.

Submission Deadline: February 8th, 2021

Objective: The objectives of the Literary Project are to provide income for island artists with financial need and create a public testament to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the economic and cultural crisis, and the future beyond it. The literary works will remain a piece of Island history.

Artist Eligibility

Artists must live on Vashon Island.

Financial Need: This is the first !Attention! Artists at Work project open to artists who both have and have not been financially impacted by COVID-19. However, compensation is available for artists who have been financially impacted.

Artists who have been financially impacted:

Financial need can include the loss of a job or reduction in hours, loss of traditional opportunities for income from writing, or loss of a job by a partner or spouse within their household. !Attention! Artists at Work was designed as a jobs program to support artists, so if you have been financially impacted by COVID-19 and the economic crisis that began in March, please let us know or ask any questions you may have about artist eligibility for compensation. Financial need has no influence on the selection process by the jury.

Artists who have not been financially impacted:

Due to the community interest in this project, we have expanded the eligibility of this project to include artists who were not impacted financially this year. Financial need has no influence on the selection process by the jury.  Artists in this category will not be financially compensated, but can still apply to have their work included in the project.
